LESLEY MANLEY WAS INSTRUCTED TO REPRESENT A VULNERABLE CLIENT OF GOOD CHARACTER WHO WAS ALLEGED TO HAVE COMMITTED THE OFFENCE OF CONSPIRACY TO BLACKMAIL ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT FALSE IMPRISONMENT AND WITNESS INTIMIDATION. MISS MANLEY’S CLIENT WAS THE FIRST DEFENDANT ON THE INDICTMENT AND THE ALLEGED INSTIGATOR OF THE CONSPIRACIES.

ON THE FIRST OCCASION HE WAS ALLEGED TO HAVE ATTENDED THE BUSINESS PREMISES OF HIS FORMER BUSINESS PARTNER IN THE COMPANY OF OTHERS IN ORDER TO THREATEN THE COMPLAINANT WITH A KNIFE. THE BUSINESS PARTNER WAS ALSO SAID TO BE THE SUBJECT OF DEATH THREATS AND TORTURE IF HE FAILED TO TRANSFER MONEY ARISING FROM A BUSINESS DEBT.

ON THE SECOND OCCASION HE WAS ALLEGED TO HAVE ATTENDED THE BUSINESS PREMISES WITH HIS FIVE CO-DEFENDANTS. THEY WERE ACCUSED OF FALSELY IMPRISONING THE ALLEGED VICTIM, ASSAULTING HIM AND AGAIN THREATENING HIM WITH SERIOUS VIOLENCE IN ORDER TO OBTAIN MONEY.

SUBSEQUENTLY THERE WAS EMAIL CONTACT FROM THE DEFENDANT AFTER HIS ARREST WHICH WAS SAID TO CONTAIN THREATS INTENDED TO PUT THE ALLEGED VICTIM IN FEAR AND WITHDRAW HIS STATEMENTS TO THE POLICE. THAT CHARGE CONCERNED THE MEANING OF THE WORD “HARM’. THE DEFENDANT CONTENDED HE MEANT THAT HIS FORMER BUSINESS PARTNER WOULD BE SPIRITUALLY HARMED AS OPPOSED TO PHYSICALLY HARMED.

FOLLOWING A FOUR WEEK TRIAL DURING WHICH THE ALLEGED VICTIM WAS CROSS-EXAMINED EXTENSIVELY BY MISS MANLEY THE DEFENDANT RETAINED HIS GOOD CHARACTER.
