Michael Polak Addresses the China Forum in Washington

Church Court Chambers international barrister Michael Polak spoke at the China Forum in Washington DC on Wednesday 18 October 2023 on a panel titled ‘Towards Accountability: Pursuing Legal Action on the Xinjiang Atrocity Through International Mechanisms’. This panel examined the potential for accountability for the international crimes being committed by the Chinese Government against the Uyghur and other Turkic people.   Michael spoke about the landmark case he has brought for the World Uyghur Congress and Uyghur Human Rights Project before the Argentinian Courts using universal jurisdiction provisions under the Argentinian Constitution to examine the individual responsibility of Chinese Communist Party officials for genocide and crimes against humanity (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/08/17/landmark-case-filed-against-chinese-officials-human-rights-atrocities/)  He also spoke about the increased use of universal jurisdiction provisions around the world and the possibilities this creates as well as the needs for detailed evidential databased so the perpetrators of mass atrocities can be prosecuted whenever they travel to states with these provisions.
