A footballer accused of placing over 1800 bets on football matches is now free to begin playing after the conclusion of a Football Association investigation.

Represented by Yasin Patel, the player was questioned by the FA’s betting integrity team with evidence provided by a number of sources including betting companies and mobile phone sources, and had to explain the facts surrounding the placing of bets and patterns of betting. He is accused of placing numerous bets on football matches, over a short period of time.

Commenting on Yasin’s assistance throughout the investigation, the player said, “I honestly don’t know what I would have done without Yasin (…) supporting and advising me the way he did. The way Yasin was so calm and kind in the way he handled the situation, helped me and got me this result.”

Betting by leading footballers has been the subject of scrutiny and investigation by various governing bodies, especially the FA, as well as betting companies and personnel. Cases and investigations such as that of the Newcastle United player, Sandro Tonali, and Lucas Paqueta of West Ham United have raised the ongoing debate about footballers and betting.

Yasin Patel is a leading Criminal Defence and Sports Barrister at Church Court Chambers and a Director of SLAM Global. He has represented many athletes and sports players on fixing, betting and corruption matters.
