Last minute discharge for George Hepburne-Scott’s extradition client

On 1 April 2025, George Hepburne-Scott’s client in the case of E.D.B. v Spain was discharged immediately before his surrender to Spain in relation to multiple fraud charges.
Extradition had been resisted at Westminster Magistrates’ Court and then on appeal to the High Court; The appeal was dismissed and the client faced immediate surrender.
However, George and Giovanna Fiorentino of GT Stewart Solicitors had been working closely in parallel with Spanish lawyers in order to have the extradition warrant compromised at source.
These efforts paid off and on 1 April 2025, the client was discharged following the withdrawal of the warrant in Spain. He was naturally thrilled. This case serves to highlight the importance of working closely with lawyers in the requesting territory as a ‘twin-track’ approach to maximise the chances of successfully resisting extradition.
George was instructed by Giovanna Fiorentino of GT Stewart Solicitors.
