Michael Polak comments on the risks posed by new China embassy, in Brussels Signal

Michael Polak has provided comment in Brussels Signal on the risks associated with China’s proposed new ‘mega-embassy’, which would replace its current embassy in Marylebone.
Michael is acting pro bono for the Royal Mint Estate Tenants and Residents Association, and represented them at a planning inquiry following the ‘calling in’ of the planning application by Angela Rayner MP. The inquiry concluded this week, and a final decision by Ms. Rayner is expected in the summer.
Michael commented: “Why were the Metropolitan Police, who were originally so clear and strident in their opposition to an embassy at this site, so easily persuaded by China’s word on security and protests?”
He further noted that the new embassy’s neighbours “live in an area made famous by the Battle of Cable Street, so it should not surprise you that they stand against being the forced neighbours of an overseas outpost of repression, which targets people based upon their religion, race, and belief in democracy.”
Michael’s comments were published in Brussels Signal, 20 February 2025.
