Yasin Patel was interviewed on BBC Radio 4 during the Six O’Clock News and commented in BBC Sport and the Financial Times, discussing the European Court of Justice’s decision that Fifa’s football transfer rules break EU rules on free movement.

“Two key judgments released today by the Court of Justice for the European Union (CJEU) have ruled that some of FIFA’s Rules in relation to the transfer system and in particular, transfer of players, are ‘contrary to EU law’.

“The result could mean far-reaching consequences for the transfer system, similar to how the Bosman Ruling effected transfers in 1995.

“Players may now be able to move more freely to other clubs by breaking with a contract as opposed to being tied to the club and contract. In addition, buying clubs may not have to pay compensation or claims.

“As well as FIFA, clubs all across Europe will have legal teams pay close attention to the judgments and consequences for them.”

Yasin’s interview with BBC Radio 4 and his comments in BBC Sport and the Financial Times were published on 4 October 2024.
