Yasin Patel interview by BBC Radio 5 Live regarding “spygate”

Church Court Chambers’ Yasin Patel appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live to discuss the Southampton “spygate” case, after the club was removed from the Championship playoff final after it was found to have breached EFL regulations concerning the unauthorised filming of other clubs’ training sessions.

Speaking on the Tony Livesey show, Yasin discussed the commercial significance of the Championship play-off final, with promotion to the Premier League at stake. He explained the relevant EFL regulations, including the requirement for clubs to act towards each other in good faith (under EFL Regulation 3.4), and the rule prohibiting clubs from observing, or attempting to observe, another club’s training within 72 hours of a fixture (EFL Regulation 127).

Yasin noted that Southampton’s three breaches within half a season, despite the club admitting fault, were likely to have been treated as aggravating factors by the panel.

He described a sanction of this scale as unprecedented, but explained that the punishment was within the powers available to the independent disciplinary commission. He also observed that the severity of the punishment may act as a deterrent to other clubs.

With both the hearing and appeal taking place within a 48-hour window, Yasin said that one of the most striking aspects of the case was the speed with which the decision was reached. Following the appeal panel’s decision to uphold the sanction as proportionate, Yasin suggested that Southampton will have significant work to do to repair its reputation and move beyond the incident.

Yasin appeared on the Tony Livesey show on BBC Radio 5 Live, 21 May 2026.
