Emma has a busy and diverse practice, and accepts instructions across Chambers’ main practice areas, focussing primarily on criminal and regulatory matters. Emma regularly appears in the Crown Court on a broad spectrum of criminal offences including ABH, robbery, dishonesty offences, drugs supply and fraud. Emma both prosecutes and defends, and has also acted as a led junior.
Emma has also assisted in multiple inquests, undertaking complex and challenging work as junior counsel. She has experience in reviewing evidence, drafting documents and briefing notes, and drafting submissions and evidence summaries to the Coroner.
Currently, she is acting as part of a team of Junior Counsel to the Inquest (CTI), in the inquests concerning the deaths of the patients of former breast surgeon Ian Paterson.
Emma is adept at quickly building a strong rapport with lay and professional clients alike, and her thorough case preparation allows her to provide clear and realistic advice which instils confidence and trust in her clients. Given her previous experience working in the charity sector supporting individuals with complex disabilities, Emma is particularly experienced in representing clients who may be vulnerable or have variable support needs, understanding the importance of empathy and clear communication. This skill enables her to achieve positive outcomes in these cases.
Emma has a growing professional discipline and regulatory practice and welcomes instructions in this area. She is a case presenter for the Nursing and Midwifery Council and has been instructed in interim and substantive fitness to practice hearings.
Before starting pupillage, Emma gained valuable experience as a commercial litigation paralegal assisting with high-value civil litigation and arbitration matters at two leading silver circle solicitors’ firms. She assisted in preparation for hearings at all levels from the County Court to Supreme Court appeals, including professional negligence, insolvency, defamation, white-collar crime, private prosecutions, and civil fraud matters. Emma has also worked in-house at a global investment bank and in investigation teams at financial and healthcare regulators.
Emma was recently appointed as a Trustee of The London Legal Support Trust.
